The Magic Number Problem for Subregular Language Families

چکیده
We investigate the magic number problem, that is, the question whether there exists a minimal n-state nondeterministic finite automaton (NFA) whose equivalent minimal deterministic finite automaton (DFA) has α states, for all n and α satisfying n ≤ α ≤ 2n. A number α not satisfying this condition is called a magic number (for n). It was shown in [11] that no magic numbers exist for general regular languages, while in [5] trivial and non-trivial magic numbers for unary regular languages were identified. We obtain similar results for automata accepting subregular languages like, for example, combinational languages, star-free, prefix-, suffix-, and infix-closed languages, and prefix-, suffix-, and infix-free languages, showing that there are only trivial magic numbers, when they exist. For finite languages we obtain some partial results showing that certain numbers are non-magic.

$Z_k$-Magic Labeling of Some Families of Graphs
For any non-trivial abelian group A under addition a graph $G$ is said to be $A$-textit{magic} if there exists a labeling $f:E(G) rightarrow A-{0}$ such that, the vertex labeling $f^+$ defined as $f^+(v) = sum f(uv)$ taken over all edges $uv$ incident at $v$ is a constant. An $A$-textit{magic} graph $G$ is said to be $Z_k$-magic graph if the group $A$ is $Z_k$ the group of integers modulo $k...
متن کاملTotally magic cordial labeling of some graphs
A graph G is said to have a totally magic cordial labeling with constant C if there exists a mapping f : V (G) ∪ E(G) → {0, 1} such that f(a) + f(b) + f(ab) ≡ C (mod 2) for all ab ∈ E(G) and |nf (0) − nf (1)| ≤ 1, where nf (i) (i = 0, 1) is the sum of the number of vertices and edges with label i. In this paper, we give a necessary condition for an odd graph to be not totally magic cordial and ...
متن کاملOn Internal Contextual Grammars with Subregular Selection Languages
In this paper, we study the power of internal contextual grammars with selection languages from subfamilies of the family of regular languages. If we consider families Fn which are obtained by restriction to n states or nonterminals or productions or symbols to accept or to generate regular languages, we obtain four infinite hierarchies of the corresponding families of languages generated by in...
متن کاملCircle Geometry and Three–Dimensional Subregular Translation Planes
Algebraic pencils of surfaces in a three–dimensional circle geometry are used to construct several infinite families of non-André subregular translation planes which are three–dimensional over their kernels. In fact, exponentially many such planes of a given order are constructed for both even and odd characteristic.
متن کاملSUBREGULAR REPRESENTATIONS OF sln AND SIMPLE SINGULARITIES OF TYPE An−1 IAIN GORDON AND DMITRIY RUMYNIN
Alexander Premet has stated the following problem: what is a relation between subregular nilpotent representations of a classical semisimple restricted Lie algebra and non-commutative deformations of the corresponding singularities? We solve this problem for type A.
